What do bees actually respond to?
Fear isn't usually the problem
After many years around bees, I’ve found that fear itself rarely creates problems.
What can create problems is how fear changes our behavior.
When we’re nervous, we often start waving our hands, stepping backward suddenly or trying to swat away bees that fly close to our face. To a bee, those movements can appear far more threatening than someone calmly standing still and minding their own business.
Most bees are too busy to care about ya
It’s also common for first time visitors to an apiary to be surprised by how closely bees fly past them.
In most cases, the bees are completely focused on their work and care far more about the flowers than the people standing nearby. Quite often, you’ve simply found yourself in the middle of their flight path as they’re headin’ to or from the hive.
Once you realize that, bein’ around bees becomes much less intimidating.
Confidence comes with experience
The more time you spend around bees, the more you discover that patience and calm movements are often your most valuable tools. Over time, that initial nervousness is gradually replaced by curiosity and respect.
Rather than seeing beekeeping as somethin’ to fear, try looking at it as a way to reconnect with nature. Bees teach us to slow down, observe, and work with nature’s rhythms instead of trying to control them. Maybe that’s why so many people who once felt uneasy around bees eventually come to see them as some of the most fascinating creatures in the natural world.
As for me, some of my favorite moments are the quiet early mornings spent near the hives with a large cup of tea in hand – thinking about the day ahead while the bees begin their work.
