The day we all been waiting for
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who submitted name suggestions and helped inspire the journey along the way. So many wonderful ideas came in, and although the final choices ultimately landed on a few personal favorites, your suggestions helped shape the process from beginning to end.
I would especially like to thank Roine for the charming name suggestion Toker. The name suited the duck better than one might think, but since it turned out to be a female, the final choice instead became Vimsa.
A big thank you also goes to Marie-Louise for the fantastic name Joakim von Anka. Although the full name turned out to be a little too long to call across the fields on a rainy morning here at Alhaga, the inspiration lived on and ultimately resulted in the duck being named Joakim.
Thank you as well to Miss Cool and Johanna for your wonderful name suggestions and your enthusiasm throughout the process. No one has been forgotten, and every contribution has been greatly appreciated along the way.
The flock has finally received their names and is now ready to take the next step as official members of the Alhaga homesteads family.
Meet Alhaga’s new duck flock
🦆 Duck #1 – Tjöta
The one who always seems to have something to say.
🦆 Duck #2 – Vaka
Always alert and aware of everything happening around her.
🦆 Duck #3 – Saga
A name rooted in Nordic folklore and storytelling traditions.
🦆 Duck #4 – Vimsa
Curious, energetic, and often setting off on little adventures of her own.
🦆 Duck #5 – Joakim
Inspired by the memorable suggestion Joakim von Anka.
🦆 Duck #6 – Alva
A name that feels right at home among the forests and fairytale spirit of Alhaga.
From this day forward, they are no longer just six new ducks on the homestead. They are Tjöta, Vaka, Saga, Vimsa, Joakim, and Alva, along with the newest little star of the flock.
The tiny duckling I affectionately call Skrutten, a Swedish nickname for a small and beloved little rascal… – who I very much hope turns out to be a little girl. Their story here at Alhaga has only just begun, and you can be sure that many more adventures are still waiting just around the corner.

When I invited you to help name Alhaga’s six newest duck family members, I was actually keeping a little secret from you.
There is, in fact, a seventh little duck here as well, Right now, I call her “Skrutten.“
She hatched from one of three eggs purchased from a farm shop in Alingsås here in Sweden and has already begun writing a story entirely her own.
What has surprised me the most is that introducing her to the flock has not been nearly as simple as I imagined. Even though the ducks have grown up close to one another and have heard each other every day, the little one still chooses to keep her distance.
The flock, however, seems to have made up its mind long ago. Especially the alpha female, currently known simply as Number Two on our naming list, who often seeks contact and shows great curiosity toward the newest member of the family.
The only problem is that the feelings do not seem to be mutual.
The little duck is afraid of almost everything, and whenever one of the others comes too close, she panics and runs off – Usually seeking comfort with me instead. Because of that, a simple wire fence has become an important part of our evening routine. Not to protect her from the flock, but to give her the opportunity to be close to the others without feeling overwhelmed.
Many evenings, the alpha female settles down right next to the fence, only a few inches away, almost as if she is trying to tell her that she belongs there with them. But so far, the little duck is not quite ready to believe it herself.
Over the past few weeks, we have built an unexpected bond. We have even developed our own little whistling language between us.
How this story will unfold, I honestly do not know yet. But it has become a reminder that keeping animals does not always follow the plans we make in advance.
To be continued.
Hopefully, one day, the little duck will discover what the rest of the flock already seems to know: that she is part of the family.
And don’t forget, voting is only open until tomorrow, when we will select the names that advance to the final round. 🦆🏆

Six new ducks, six stories waiting to be told
Six new family members have moved in here at Alhaga homestead. These Indian runner ducks have quickly become a natural part of the homestead’s daily rhythm – curious, calm, charming and each one blessed with a personality all their own.
They’ve already found their favorite spots, settled into little routines, and discovered their own ways of “talking” whenever they want to get somebody’s attention. But there’s still one thing missing, their names.
And now I’d love to invite you to be part of choosing them.
Alhaga homestead is a place that grows through community. Naming the flock is more than just a fun little activity. When you help name these ducks, you help shape a piece of the homestead’s story and become part of the tale as it unfolds, one day at a time.
Whether you’ve been here since the very beginning or just found your way to Alhaga recently, this is a place where we get to make the stories together.
A year ago, I did something similar when I asked for plant suggestions for the new property in Ljungskile here in Sweden. Back then, only a handful of folks had found their way to the blog, and the response was modest. But what I did receive meant more to me than I can rightly say. It gave me the courage to keep walking down new and uncharted paths, paths I’ll be sharing more about in time.
A whole lot has happened since then.
The new blog platform is slowly taking shape, growing stronger and more personal as older posts are moved over and given a little freshening up. And one thing that has been a strong foundation from the very beginning is the joy of letting you, the reader to be part of the journey.
So now, we’re gonna do this together.
Welcome to the naming of our new family members. I’m truly looking forward to reading your suggestions.

Meet the flock – Our six new family members
Here they are…
Each duck has been given a number to make it easier to refer to them when you leave your suggestions. Beneath each picture, I’ve written a short description of their personality – kind of like Snow white and the seven dwarfs, only with duck characters instead. 😉
Some of them have already shown clear personality traits, while others are still a little harder to read.
So feel free to go by their looks, their expression, or simply the feeling you get when you see them. Maybe you’ll come up with the perfect name for a side of their personality I haven’t discovered yet.
“Trust yer gut, follow the feathers, and choose the name that feels just right for the duck beneath them.”
A little instinct can reveal a whole lot of personality.
Duck #1: The chatty spokesperson
Meet Tjöta, the flock’s self-appointed spokesperson
Her name comes from a Swedish word meaning “to chatter” or “to keep on talking” – and it suits her to a tee. She’s forever chattering, and thanks to her steady stream of duck-talk, I always know where the flock is. Her message seems to be, “Here we are – here I am – and I ain’t scared of no fox!”
Quiet is not really her way, not even when she’s eating. Then she smacks her bill and coos with pure delight. But if supper is late, she can raise her voice mighty quick and tell ya exactly what she thinks about it.
Tjöta is simply a duck with plenty to say, and she makes darn sure I listen.
Duck #2 – The watchful one
She seems to keep a close eye on me and carefully follows everything I do. Maybe she’s the flock’s supervisor – or maybe she’s just making sure everything is done proper.
Duck #3 – The black-and-white belle
With her black-and-white speckled feathers, she certainly stands out from the flock. For now, we’ll let time tell whether she’s the flock’s elegant lady, its adventurous explorer, or something else entirely.
Duck #4 – The playful snail hunter
She loves splashing around in the water tub and is often the first one to explore a new corner of the homestead. But her true specialty is hunting snails. Whenever she finds one, she gulps it down with great enthusiasm, all while quacking happily to herself.
Duck #5 – The head of the roost
Here we have the flock’s wise drake and undisputed head of the roost. He keeps a close watch on everything happening around the homestead. Nothing much gets past him. He always keeps one eye on me – and he’s first in line when the food comes out.
Duck #6 – The shy one with a big heart
She takes her time, but there’s a whole lot of heart beneath those feathers. With her distinctive markings, she’s impossible to miss. Her personality is still unfolding, but she’s already showing a style all her own.
Which duck has already won you over?
Leave one name for every duck, or start with the feathered friend who first caught your eye. Tell us why your suggestion fits – their markings, their manners, or the funny feeling you get when you see them – and help us discover names as memorable as this lively little flock.
Send in your duck name suggestions!
Get your suggestions in by October 14, then fly back on October 15 when the finalists are revealed and voting begins. I can’t wait to see which names rise to the top—and to keep sharing the flock’s adventures around the homestead.
